Stuart, FL (February 27, 2012)- Signature Sponsor Fox, Wackeen, Dungey, Sobel, Bush and McCluskey (Fox Wackeen Dungey) and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties (BBBS) are proud to welcome Bernard Carmouche, Culinary Director for Emeril’s Restaurants, as the Honorary Chair for The Big Taste.

Chef Carmouche’s story begins like many of the children in Big Brothers Big Sisters’ programs- which is probably why he is such a big fan of mentoring. In high school he worked as a dishwasher at Commander’s Palace in New Orleans, trying to save enough to buy a car. Emeril Lagasse noticed him taking the initiative, and promised to teach him about cooking as long as he stayed in school. Here is a short except of a recent article in the Orlando Sentinel:

From Commander's Palace and eventually to Emeril's in New Orleans and a coveted internship with acclaimed French chef Roger Verge along the way, Carmouche worked his way up.

"Commander's and Lagasse turned my life around," says Carmouche. "I grew up in a neighborhood where it was very hard to do the right thing."

And just as he was mentored by others, he's constantly on the lookout for young talent in the kitchens he oversees every day in Florida.

"Whatever is taught to you, you teach the next person," says Carmouche. "Mentoring is a gift not to keep, but to pass on."

Chef Carmouche will join Big Brothers Big Sisters supporters at this exciting culinary event and has generously donated dinner for four guests at Emeril’s exclusive Kitchen Table for The Big Taste’s annual silent auction.

The Big Taste, sometimes referred to as The Taste of Martin County or A Taste of Martin County’s Best, showcases local restaurants, caterers, food wine and beer vendors and offers attendees a “taste” of what everyone has to offer. Restaurants compete for votes from attendees in each of the six categories: Best Soup, Best Salad, Best Appetizer, Best Entrée, Best Dessert

and Best Presentation.

My name is Chelsea Williams and I have been interning with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties since August. My experience here has been amazing! When I first began I was a little intimidated because I did not have any background knowledge in the field of non-profits, however, I was eager to learn so everyday I came with laptop and notebook ready in hand. I had to first interview with Kara Justi, Chief Development Officer of BBBS of PB and Martin Counties, and from that interview I knew she was an astonishing woman. Her flamboyant and super pleasant personalities are qualities needed in the world of non-profit. Justi mentored me and several other girls and educated us on the dos and don’ts when it comes to maintaining a non-profit organization and writing grants. We worked extensively on research for grants. We were made aware of the importance of conducting research before you can even think about writing a grant. We were educated on the different types of grants and the ones that are most preferred by non-profit organizations. We were also given access to exclusive websites such as the Foundation Center Online. Utilizing such websites afforded us the opportunity to view specific grant-makers’ requirements, grant-makers’ 990s, and also to see what organizations the grant-makers had previously donated to. Lastly, each of us got to submit our own grant to Wal-Mart. Hitting the submit button was the most rewarding part of the entire process. Through the advise of Justi I also have been afforded another opportunity; interning for local magazine, HER LIFE. Working with the program is beneficial to all participants. Rewarding experiences were reciprocated on both ends. Overall, I enjoyed my experience with BBBS of Palm Beach and Martin Counties and I recommend the organization to anyone wanting to explore the field of non-profit.

FAU Students Benefit from Writing for Nonprofit Service Learning Hours with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties!

As an English major, enrolling in one of Florida Atlantic University’s Special Topics courses, Writing for Nonprofit ENC 4930, turned into a life changing event. Not only do we study different types of national and local nonprofit organizations, but we also were able to research and choose a nonprofit organization we are interested in completing service learning hours or an internship. FAU works with several nonprofit organizations through different partnerships, so we had a nice list to choose from – covering many areas of nonprofit. I worked with Upward Bound, America Reads, and Ameri Corps while earning my first degree at Indiana University, so my obvious choice was Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties. Although I am on a different side of the volunteer spectrum for the agency, it is essentially just as important as mentoring. Without the grant writing, community involvement, partnerships gained, and our place in social media BBBS would not be able to mentor as many children and make such a big difference in the communities. My volunteer hours are wonderful learning experiences at Big Brothers Big Sisters as well as being given the opportunity to write in a “real world” situation by applying what I learn in class to a professional setting. The service learning hours I completed at the agency provided me with valuable information required to explore the nonprofit world. I have studied and even written my own grant through the nonprofit organization, mentored by Kara Justi. Volunteering at BBBS compliments the learning from my class by giving the opportunity for hands-on-experience. I have learned so much about the agency as a mentoring program as well as a small business. Kara turned this into a meaningful experience by focusing my group and I on different nonprofit websites that provide so much useful information I take back to the classroom some days and writing our own grants some days. The office atmosphere at BBBS in West Palm Beach is ideal for someone just getting out of college that wants to give back to the community. Kara is supportive and her small staff gets a lot done working collaboratively in a relaxed environment – a business casual, professional position that changes at-risk children’s lives for the better every day. The semester has gone by so fast; it will not be easy to depart from this insightful, significant learning experience when the semester is over.

Santa Claus Comes to Downtown At The Gardens

Palm Beach Gardens, FL (November 29, 2011)- Whole Foods has partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties (BBBS) for their inaugural holiday event to bring Santa Claus to Downtown At The Gardens on Sunday, December 11, 2011 from 1pm-6pm. Hamilton R. Head, mascot for the Jupiter Hammerheads will also join Saint Nick at Downtown At The Gardens. This event is free to the public so come out and support BBBS as they ring in the holidays!

Ornaments with special offers and coupon books will be on sale to benefit BBBS. There will be ongoing raffles with thousands of dollars in prizes and a drawing every 15 minutes.

“We are looking forward to our holiday event at Downtown At The Gardens. This is our first year and we are very appreciative of the support from Whole Foods,” said BBBS Chief Development Officer Kara Justi. “We look forward to seeing our supporters and volunteers next Sunday!”

Martin County’s Oldest Community Theatre, The Barn Theatre invited Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach & Martin Counties, Inc.(BBBS) to be their guests at a “Sneak Preview” of their new Comedy, “Play On,” on Thursday evening.

"Play On" is a hilarious story of a theater group trying desperately to put on a play in spite of interference from a haughty playwright who keeps revising the script. Act I is a rehearsal of the show; Act II is the near disastrous dress rehearsal; and the final act is the actual performance in which anything that can go wrong, does.

"On behalf of all of us serving children at BBBS, we sincerely appreciated the opportunity The Barn Theatre afforded these children and adults in witnessing live theatre,” said Bill Bee, President and CEO of BBBS. “Cultural experiences are extremely important in the positive development of a child.”

Final School Supply Drop-Offs are Scheduled for Pleasant City Elementary and Coleman Park Community Center

Students at Pleasant City Elementary School and in the Coleman Park Community Center will be stocked up for the school year thanks to the generous donations of Publix shoppers. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties and West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio will be delivering donated supplies to these two stops on Friday, September 9.

Publix Super Markets and Comcast are working with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties, Inc (BBBS) to generate donated school supplies for the School Tools for Cool Kids annual drive from August 1- September 2. Comcast is providing advertising for the drive through public service announcements.

Publix customers have already donated enough supplies for approximately 2,000 students in need. Each donation is valued at an estimated $6 per student, making the overall value of the program over $12,000 so far. Over 40 volunteers are picking up the donated school supplies from local Publix stores and bringing them to BBBS headquarters on Kirk Road in West Palm Beach. BBBS has already donated school supplies to Roosevelt Elementary School, Roosevelt Middle School, Seagull Academy and Palm Springs Middle School.

Supplies will be delivered according to the following schedule:

Pleasant City Elementary School: 10:15AM
Coleman Park Community Center: 11:00 AM

Big Snorkeling Adventure

Florida Oceanographic Society invited children from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach & Martin Counties to attend a private Snorkeling Clinic at Bathtub Beach on Tuesday, August 9^th. Deep Six Watersports in Stuart kindly donated the rentals of the snorkeling gear. The children and their parents were able to learn the basics of snorkeling and experience the amazing worm reef.

“We are thankful that Florida Oceanographic Society and Deep Six Watersports sponsored our children to participate in the Snorkeling 101 clinic,” said VP of Programs Stacey Brownlow. “What a great opportunity to learn and experience the wonders we have in our own back yard!”

“Florida Oceanographic Society is excited to provide our Snorkeling 101 clinic to these children. Mulligan’s Beach House Bar & Grill located in Jensen Beach and Downtown Stuart held a fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties (BBBS) on Thursday evening that helped BBBS raise over $700. The summer fun themed night included games, crafts, face painting and giveaways!

“We are thrilled to have such a wonderful relationship with such an amazing restaurant. Mulligan’s has always been a huge supporter of BBBS,” said Chief Development Officer Kara Thornberry. “They annually participate in our golf tournaments and The Big Taste! We are so happy that they were able to include us in their 12 weeks of summer fun program again this year.”

Match Spotlight: Malik and Morgan

Malik and Morgan met in the beginning of the 2010-11 school year. It seemed to be a challenging match at first; Malik did not respect Morgan or himself. He would skip completing his homework and go to baseball practice instead. He also got into a fight with another boy at his afterschool club and had to be suspended. There was no question that Malik was going to be a challenge to work with. His Big Sister Morgan continued to be patient with him; finding positive qualities in him and offering words of encouragement. Instead of trying to change everything about Malik, Morgan focused on building a trusting relationship. It didn’t take long before Morgan and Malik were good friends; laughing and joking whenever they were together. Within a couple months, Malik’s grades started improving as well as his behavior. As Morgan and Malik filled their “My Good Character Book” each week, Malik started to realize how good of a student he could be and how far he had come. Malik was demonstrating respect for Morgan, but it didn’t stop there. He started showing respect for his fellow classmates and most importantly in how he carried himself. Malik is now being responsible in completing his daily homework assignments and participating in class, showing excellent Citizenship. In fact, Malik was recently awarded “Citizen of the Month” at his school! This was a huge accomplishment for Malik and also for his Big Sister Morgan, reassuring her that she was making a difference. If the Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentoring Program had not been there for Malik and his Big Sister had not encouraged him to practice the 6 Pillars of Character Counts!, Malik may not be the successful, outstanding child he is today!

President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America Visits Palm Beach and Martin Counties

Stuart, FL (May 23, 2011)- Karen Mathis, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America visited Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties last week, meeting with board members and agency advocates in support of the recently expanded agency. Ms. Mathis gave presentations, met with the board of trustees and select supporters and visited State Attorney Michael McAuliffe’s office to meet with Career Skills Program mentors.

“I look forward to seeing this agency continue to grow,” said Ms. Mathis. “It is important to emphasize that Big Brothers Big Sisters is a donor supported volunteer driven organization, and our agencies need significant support on the local level to provide our programs to children facing adversity. We are an independently evaluated mentoring organization with proven outcomes and impact. These programs change lives, and I am excited to see the Palm Beach community getting involved.”

“We truly enjoyed Ms. Mathis’ visit. Her enthusiasm, encouragement and support will go a long way towards our expansion,” said Bill Bee, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties. “Her vision and can-do attitude towards improving the lives of children is inspiring. More than 200 children are on the waiting list for a Big Brother or Big Sisters in Palm Beach and Martin Counties. 20 Hours with Karen Mathis- Posted By Bill Bee

What an amazing 20 hours I just completed with our National President/CEO for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.

Monday evening offered the initial platform for Ms. Mathis to engage 40 of our Board & Council members, several significant funders (current & future) and numerous local businesses; the setting was Phillips Point Club – incredible vistas and magnificent food. Thank You, Mary Healy for creating the wonderful setting.

The group, while diverse in nature and professions, engaged in social amenities awaiting a brief but poignant speech by BBBSA President/CEO Karen Mathis. The message was very clear; BBBS is back in PBC and National is here to support the expansion. The speech made abundantly clear that Palm Beach and Martin Counties presented great need, but also had the potential resources to address this opportunity. At this point, Ms. Mathis stated BBBSA is a volunteer organization that is donor supported; we are # 12 in Brand name, but have been #36 in developing funds – that is changing! With this message our new mantra was repeated –“Start Something”.

Karen’s comments and supporting evidence of the impact of one to one mentoring did not fall on deaf ears. The energy and passion coupled by Ms. Mathis capacity to recognize each participant’s ability to advance our expansion was wonderful. I believe everyone left the evening knowing that they each had the ability to change a young life in some positive manner.

This morning, Gary Vonk , President of Keiser University hosted a breakfast for the Executive Board of BBBS of PB & MC to meet with Karen in a one to one setting; this allowed each member some constructive face time with Ms. Mathis. The breakfast offered an hour plus of some lively discussion, education and philanthropy dynamics, as we all consider our board roles and expectations.

A 10:00 appointment with the State Attorney Michael McAuliffe facilitated by Sarah Alsofrom (Monday evening attendee and an incredible supporter of our Career Skills Program) allowed Ms. Mathis some insight to the business mentors in our Career Skills Mentoring Program. Karen immediately mentioned attorneys are great mentors; did I mention, Karen Mathis is an attorney and former President of the American Bar Association. We enjoyed an hour of State Attorney McAuliffe’s time in addition to members of his staff that have served as mentors in this program. Not a bad group to advocate on our opportunities to serve children. Thank you Michael, Sarah, Autumn and Lynn for what you do for our kids.

Closing out the trip, we met a group of individuals for lunch at the Ritz Carlton; an opportunity developed by Larry Stern (Chief of Staff for LaBovick Law). The hosts of the lunch were Cubby Steinhardt and Brian LaBovick. The additional participants at the lunch represented a cross section of professions and industry, but all had one thing in common: what can we do to improve the lives of children facing adversity or lacking opportunity. Karen immediately went to task and addressed a myriad of questions while keeping our mission, programs and statistical evidence underlying our outcomes at the forefront of the discussions. Karen emphasized the backlog of children already in our agency’s pipeline that can only be remedied through development of greater resources to support our initiatives.

One might now ask, what has been accomplished by Ms. Mathis visit to our community and the agency? The most basic response would be; opportunity, opportunity and opportunity! Ms. Mathis made it crystal clear; the need is obvious, but it is the resources developed that are presently required. BBBS of Palm Beach and Martin County is making major progress in all areas of measured performance as it expands their services into PBC, however, professionally supervised and supported one to one matches requires both time and treasure – and right now, its treasure.

What an awesome twenty hours of passion, energy, understanding and education for board, council members, businesses and volunteers; Thank you Karen Mathis and all the people that attended our opportunities.

Stuart, FL (May 17, 2011)- Keiser University’s West Palm Beach Campus graciously underwrote 200 tickets to send children and mentors from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties (BBBS) to Roger Dean Stadium’s Slammin’ Saturdays on May 28th.

Roger Dean Stadium’s ‘Slammin’ Saturdays’ offers a full evening of fun with live music and a grand finale fireworks display. “Littles” and “Bigs,” children and their mentors, can now attend the game free of charge thanks to the generosity of Keiser University.

“Keiser University has a long history of supporting beneficial programs in our community like Big Brothers Big Sisters,” said Gary Vonk, President of Keiser University’s West Palm Beach Campus. “It is important that children in our neighborhoods have the opportunity to experience community events and activities. Each child was accompanied by the business mentor as they were both acknowledged for their accomplishments. BBBS would like to thank all of our Business Mentors and Murray Middle and Stuart Middle School’s Principals and Coordinators.

Stuart, FL (April 14, 2011)- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties, Inc (BBBS) is excited to announce the 15th Annual Big Taste and Big Tournament raised an estimated $60,000 on April 5, representing an increase of over 30% from the previous year despite weather concerns.

“We are proud to be the recipient of such community generosity,” said BBBS President/CEO Bill Bee. “The food was fantastic- our presenters really outdid themselves this year. Everyone enjoyed themselves while supporting our programs for local children. We are lucky to live in such a charitable and giving community, and we thank everyone for their support. As our community knows, we will use these funds efficiently and effectively to improve the lives of our local children.”

The Palm Beach Opera Family Opera- A “Big” Treat

Stuart, FL (March 23, 2011)- Children and mentors participating in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties programs were excited to see the Family Opera presentation of Cossi Fan Tutti on February 26th.

This special performance included a full orchestra, lavish scenery, large chorus, and Palm Beach Opera’s talented Young Artists in an abridged 90 minute version of Cossi Fan Tutti. It featured the best musical highlights of the opera as well as narration of the story and translations projected above the stage so children could understand every word. Set changes took place with an open curtain, giving children an exclusive glimpse into how the magic happens on the opera stage. Pre-performance in the Lobby guests visited “education stations” featuring musicians, singers, make-up artists, costume designers, and more. After the performance, meet the artists for photos and autographs in the theater lobby.

The Palm Beach Opera donated tickets to this unique experience to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties. Mentors and children from both counties jumped at the chance to attend.

“It is a change for our students and an opportunity for them to experience another realm of reality”, said Principal Lockhart of Palm Beach County’s Roosevelt Middle School. “For sure it is something they may never forget.”

Seeking Donations For Annual Prom Dash

Stuart, FL (March 16, 2011)- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties, Inc. (BBBS) is asking for donations of formal dresses for the 2011 Prom season. Any girl at Jensen Beach, Martin County and South Fork High Schools struggling with the costly expense of Prom is invited to schedule a confidential appointment to select a dress. The BIG Boutique will be open starting March 28^th, 2011.

“Prom is such a special event for teenagers. Prom Dash helps our local students have an incredible night they will always remember,” said Cheryl Salerno, Match Support Specialist with BBBS. “Everyone deserves to enjoy their Prom. We’re asking for dresses and shoes of all sizes. Gift certificates for dry cleaning, makeovers and up-dos are also really appreciated. Just think of everything that made your Prom special- these girls want the same thing.”

“Students always look forward to their Prom night,” said Ms. Jacqueline Townsend, teacher at South Fork High School. “It’s fantastic that Big Brothers Big Sisters is able to help so many of our teenagers have a memorable experience.”

Stuart, FL (February 28, 2011)-Neiman Marcus stores across the country helped raise over $175,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America this holiday season. Through an in-store promotion from December 7-10 customers were invited to donate $25 to Big Brothers Big Sisters. In return, customers received a $50 gift card to Neiman Marcus. Proceeds were divided between the national and local organizations based on the location of each store. Neiman Marcus of Boca Raton and Neiman Marcus of Palm Beach both participated on behalf of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties Prepares for The 15th Annual Big Taste and Big Tournament

Stuart, FL (February 28, 2011)- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties, Inc is excited to present the 15th Annual Big Taste and Big Tournament! The venue has changed to The Evergreen Club in Palm City, and the big day is set for April 5th, 2011 at 5:00pm.

The Big Taste, sometimes referred to as The Taste of Martin County or A Taste of Martin County’s Best, showcases local restaurants, caterers, food wine and beer vendors and offers attendees a “taste” of what everyone has to offer. Restaurants compete for votes from attendees in each of the six categories: Best Soup, Best Salad, Best Appetizer, Best Entrée, Best Dessert and Best Presentation. New this year will be a Best Beer category with the addition of a Beer Garden to the event. Fox Wackeen is proudly sponsoring this year.

The Big Taste is preceded by The Big Tournament, sponsored by Bayview Construction, is a fantastic golf tournament kicking off at high noon with a shotgun start. Prizes will be given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place foursomes as well as closest-to–the-pin and hole-in-one prizes.

Both events are hosted by The Evergreen Club which gives local patrons an opportunity to enjoy this dazzling private golf club nestled in Palm City. Rick Zipsir, Chief Operating Officer of The Evergreen Club is looking forward to the “Big” day. “We’re thrilled to host The Big Taste for Big Brothers Big Sisters this year,” he said. “We’re looking forward to a great time!”

“The Big Taste and Tournament are always our “Biggest” events,” said William Bee, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties. “We encourage everyone to buy their tickets early! This year we are offering online ticket sales and registration- visit www.thebigtaste.net or www.thebigtournament.com to sign up!”

Tickets are available in advance for $30 each or two for $50 and can be purchased online and at the BBBS office at 5033 SE Federal Hwy, Stuart FL 34997. Tickets will be available at the door for $40 per person.

I Carolyn, the grandmother of RaDerrick and Kincaid would like to take this time to thank each and everyone of you at Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization. Thank you all very very much for your kindness and your generosity during the holidays and all through the year. My family appreciates all that you have done for us!

The boys were able to get everything they needed, as well as what they wanted. We could not have had such a wonderful holiday without the help of all you good people at the BBBS organization.

It took me so long to write this letter because I am still taking it all in. It was truly a wonderful blessing, the heartfelt loving good things you all have done for us. Not only at Christmas but all through the year, you have helped the boys grow in many directions and for that I say "thanks."

RaDerrick had a chance to attend a football camp to better his skills, and he was elated with all that was presented to him. Both boys were able to play fall baseball because of the wonderful gift of the scholarships.

Again, I say thanks to you all, we say thank you all so very much. May God bless you all and please keep up the great work.

Phoenix and Chase

Phoenix is a 4th grade boy with 6 other siblings being raised by a single mother. When Phoenix met his Big Brother Chase, he was struggling in Reading and displayed some acting out behaviors in school. Chase was a sophomore in high school when he first met Phoenix a year ago. Phoenix felt so special to be matched with a high school student who was there just for him each week.

Chase encouraged Phoenix to practice good behavior every day and do his best in school. A year later, Phoenix’s report card shows that he is now demonstrating exemplary behavior and maintaining all passing grades! Phoenix feels comfortable with Chase and feels like he can talk to him about anything. He is so proud to have Chase as a Big Brother. When Chase attended a Christmas Party at the Boys and Girls Club last month, Phoenix couldn’t wait to introduce his Big Brother to his mom and siblings!

Chase and Phoenix have formed a wonderful friendship and Phoenix has even inspired Chase to want to go into a career that involves working with children some day!

Eric and Lucille

Eric and Lucille were matched last year, while Eric was in 2^nd grade. When they first met, Eric stated that he did not like to read and had no interest in books. Lucille knew she had her work cut out for her if she was going to get Eric excited about reading.

After the first month of meeting with Eric, Lucille sent me a poem that Eric wrote, titled “Believe in Ourself One Time”. The message of the poem is that anyone can change the world if they believe in themselves. This was the beginning of the talented creative expression that was blossoming in Eric. Lucille also inspired Eric to write and illustrate his own book, which Eric was very proud of.

It did not take long for Eric to realize how fun reading and writing can be with the encouragement from Lucille. He now looks forward to reading books each week with Lucille. Eric’s personality has really opened up and his confidence has improved tremendously since he started working with Lucille. He always has a big smile on his face when he talks about her and Lucille has told us that being a Big Sister has been the best experience of her life!

There’s much to be said for being a nonprofit that’s been around for more than 100 years.
For one thing, a lot of people have probably heard about your mission. But, there’s also a downside to that longevity.

By holding tight to the past and failing to update their message, many nonprofits have created fundraising challenges and discovered that, in order to survive, they must come up with ways to speak to a new generation of donors.

Now, for the first time since its founding more than 100 years ago, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America is doing something it has never done before: It’s asking for money.

As part of National Mentoring Month, the organization known for its mentors has launched a campaign dubbed Start Something,which highlights the “life-changing impact” a mentor can have, but also points out that there is a dollar figure attached to that mentor.

While mentors aren’t paid, there is a cost associated with their training, background checks and monitoring.

“This isn’t about putting a volunteer and child together and saying ‘bye-bye, have a good time,’” said Ana Cedeno, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County.
Cedeno, who sits on the national marketing committee for BBBS of America, said the new message unveiled this week was two years in the planning.

The need to update the organization’s message was what Cedeno calls “an a-ha moment of realizing we weren’t doing a better job, or a more global job of reaching out. A lot of folks didn’t understand that what we do takes funds.”

William Bee, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties, said the reality is that nonprofits are businesses, and it takes money to operate a business.

“This forces us to become more focused on the capacity to raise funds,” he said.

That’s particularly true for his affiliate, which last year took over some of the services offered by Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Palm Beach County after it filed for Chapter 7.

So, not only does he face the challenge of adding services, but he’s doing it from scratch.

For Bee, the challenge is “in forming long-term relationships and re-establishing the credibility of what we do,” he said.

But, the new BBBS campaign is not just about donors, it’s also a call to action in a way that will resonate with an audience that, more often than not, is getting its messages through social media channels.
“We are rebranding so that people know about the life-changing results,” said Mack Koonce, VP and COO of BBBS of America.

He said the organization was looking to create a brand that works in social media and is easy to grasp.
“Branding is a different thing in this Internet world and the way people connect,” he said. “You want to build on your strengths and legacy, [but] at the same time you have to transform and change to stay relevant, so it’s a balance of holding on to the things that make us an iconic brand, while at the same time being new and fresh and relevant.”

BBBS of America isn’t alone

Last month, I wrote that, after 160 years, the YMCA decided it was time for a makeover and would the “MCA” from its name as part of a rebranding effort.

Like BBBS of America, the YMCA’s rebranding is a jumping-off point to letting people know there are costs associated with the services they provide, and there is a need for donations.

I don’t doubt that, as fundraising becomes increasingly more difficult, nonprofits' survival will be based on their ability to come up with new ways to engage donors.

Check out what it is like to be a Big Sister! From one of our volunteer mentors, here is the story of a very special "match."

I think being a mentor is one of the most rewarding things a person can do. What could be better than making a direct impact on a youngster's life? My "Little" and I were matched in February of 2010. She is a sweet, creative 10 year old and we have many interests in common. I believe having similar hobbies is a plus and a good foundation for a pairing. We do craft projects and bake together. Each experience is an opportunity to learn. Following directions and learning procedures are good life lessons. Big Brothers Big Sisters has many functions and we try to attend as many of those as possible. My goal is to plan something special each time we are together, but honestly, my eureka moment was when we were sitting together watching for manatees. We talked for hours about everything and nothing. I looked at her and realized, this is what it is all about. Spending time enjoying each other's company.

I have noticed positive changes in my Little over the year. When we met she was reluctant to read. In fact, she would avoid it if possible. I have not pushed the issue, but try to incorporate some kind of practice into our outings. It could be reading a recipe or even the outside of a video game box, everything counts. She really surprised me recently when she decided to write an essay about a day we had spent together! I am so happy to see that she feels more comfortable with her reading and writing skills.

Our relationship has grown also. We liked each other from the beginning, but over the last months she has become very affectionate. I try to remind her often what a great girl she is and how lucky I am to have been matched with her. I am sure that I get as much out of our time together as she does and look forward to being with my Little Sister for a long time. Anyone who will listen has to hear what a great experience mentoring has been for me!
